Viktor Frankle, Rollo May & Irvin Yalom are the main contributors of Existential therapy
Existential therapy uses a philosophical approach which helps address some of the following concerns:
-Inevitability of death
-Isolation
-Meaninglessness
-Freedom & Responsibility
*these are 4 core challenges that can delay many people’s emotional development. These 4 concerns are typically the root of all emotional difficulties
The goal of existential therapy to help clients find meaning in their lives. This type of therapy helps clients become aware of what they are doing. Therapists must help clients overcome their deepest fears of life and make choices that will reflect a life they want to live. Clients and therapists typically form a very deep relationship. Treatment may not have any clear stage, and is typically never limited.
Typically the process begins by the therapist learning about their client’s background and choices. This helps the therapist see the way the client views the world, which results in the therapist helping the client uncover their deepest fears. The therapy typically may end when clients become self aware and can go on to live a more meaningful life that is not full of anxiety about human conditions.
