Reality Therapy
--William Glassner & Robert Wubbolding
-Reality therapists believe that past issues are expressed in present relationships and behaviors
-Belief that people are born with the 5 following basic needs:
1. belonging
2. power achievement
3. fun/enjoyment
4. freedom/independence
5. survival
Therapists use a broad range of techniques during therapy such as:
-Metaphors: helps give clients powerful messages in creative ways
-Questions: therapists use carefully structured questions to help clients reflect on their own lives and what is or is not working for them
-Positive addictions: by developing positive addictions, it can provide mental strength, creativity, energy and confidence
-Verbs with "ing" words: believe that emotions are not fixed states. A person is not depressed forever, but they may be depressing (in the present moment)
-Reasonable consequences: people need to be responsible and understand the consequences of their behavior
-Renegotiation: if something is not working, therapists can help clients revise plans
-Paradoxical interventions: help courage people to take responsibility for themselves
-Skill development: therapists help clients develop skills so they can be responsible and make choices that fulfill them
