-3 structures of personality
-levels of consciousness
-dreams & the unconscious
-defense mechanisms
Treatment:
Therapeutic Alliance

-therapists guide the sessions to help uncover repressed material
Transference
-client projects characteristics of another individual onto the therapist
-involves a distortion or misperception of the therapist
-there are 3 stages, and the end result can help strengthen the ego and allow the client to relate to other people
Countertransference
-help therapist understand client
-help provide corrective emotional experiences
Free Association
-People say whatever comes to mind with no censoring
-automatically links one thought to another
-helps recall past material and release strong feelings
Abreaction

-working through the painful experience and what conflicts it created
-analyze the associated emotions
